“This trip is phenomenal, because kids literally get to board boats they built and sail off into the Bronx River and on to the rest of the world, which is a great power,” he said. “That sense of accomplishment rarely happens for any of us.”

That’s Adam Green, executive director of Rocking the Boat, which this year hosted its third annual sailing trip from Connecticut’s Calf Island to Hunts Point in the Bronx. But this is no run-of-the-mill weekend canoe trip.
Covering 35 miles over four days, these students sailed in 19-foot vessels they built themselves, some of which bear an interesting provenance. In fact, one such boat in this year’s trip was built from a fallen oak supplied by The New York Botanical Garden.
Most of us would balk at this kind of physical commitment, but here we find 25 bold 16-year-olds trucking it out along the Bronx River. Click through for more on this modern maritime success. —MN

Hate flying? Wallet feeling a little thin? Boss has you tied to your desk? Never fear! You can still visit the world’s 17th most beautiful museum (as chosen by the editors of Flavorpill) without ever leaving the five boroughs. Monet’s Garden, our homage to the great Impressionist painter’s incredible garden runs through October 21. Bonus: The water lilies are in full bloom! ~AR
